No matter how advanced business seems to get, business cards seem to be the one thing that will remain a handy tool. Originally, business cards, or "calling cards" were a small piece of paper with your company name and address, phone number and your name and position with the company. Many times the backs were marked on by either the giver or the recipient with maps or notes to make the cards memorable, leading to ideas to make business cards mean more.
- Even though a business card is small, there are many ideas on how to make your business card stand out against the others and to add value for the holder of the card. For instance, if your business is on a side street or doesn't have good street exposure, have a map and directions printed on the back of your business card.
If your goal is repeat business, the back of your card could be a coupon or a discounted price. This is a great way to keep track of which salespeople are really getting their business cards out to the customers.
Looking to generate some buzz? Make the back of your card an entry form for a prize.
If you're looking for referrals that will reward a client, have the back of your card made up as a referral form with your client's name filled in. The other other lines would be for the new contact, address and phone number. If that client comes in, the original client gets a prize or a discount. Maybe a free oil change or whatever your business can offer.
How about a simple statement on the back of your card that reads: "If you are happy with our service, please pass this card on to someone who might need our services. If you are not happy, please let us know so that we can make it right."
For a business such as a flower shop or a pet shop, make your card a punch card so the client would get a free gift once 10 punches have been made. - One of the best ways to keep your name in front of the customer is to make it a magnet. It will always be in sight, whereas all other business cards will be in a confused pile in a drawer. Don't go crazy, but put a line of a bright color around the card to make it instantly visible.
The best way to keep your business card in sight is to hand them out frequently. Leave a card when you leave a tip for lunch, or leave one in a restroom or on a table in a waiting room. You will go through a lot of business cards doing this, but you just never know who is going to see it at the right time.
